February 1, 2010 - AQHA - WORLD CHAMPION FREAKY OVERCOMES TROUBLE TO WIN 2010 DEBUT

February 1, 2010 - World Champion Freaky was such an overwhelming favorite to win his 2010 debut his Saturday’s trial to the $228,450 Los Alamitos Winter Championship (G1) that he created an ultra-rare Quarter Horse minus win pool of approximately $67 in the race. A minus pool is caused when one horse is so heavily played that, after deductions of state tax and commission, there is not enough money left to pay the legally prescribed minimum on each winning bet. The racing association, in this case Los Alamitos, had to make up the difference. Place and show wagering was not offered in Freaky’s race.

He will be back in action on Saturday, February 20 to compete in the Los Alamitos Winter Championship final.

Freaky, who has now won six straight races, finished the 400-yard race in the fastest 220-yard time that he has ever posted, :9.24. And while the final time was not a track record, his strong final time of :19.31 was 14/100ths of a second faster than that of next fastest qualifier Bloke.

It was not all fun and games for the 1-9 favorite. Freaky stumbled leaving the gate from post 3 and when he was immediately bumped, jockey Francisco Rubio nearly fell off. All Rubio could do was grab a hold of the reins to try to balance himself aboard Freaky, then waited for the champion to recover and pick up his stride. Once that happened, Freaky took no mercy on his rivals, accelerating quickly and leaving the field far behind en route to an impressive 1-1/2 length victory.
